New Medical Student.
| |

The group are happy to welcome Ross Holcombe as our assigned medical student for this year. As usual with our placements Ross is in his first year at Durham University studying medicine. Ross already has one degree in pharmacology from Southampton. He originates from Croydon in south east London but his grandparents came from the north Yorkshire area. He is very interested in the surgical aspects of his course, but this may change over time. He is a keen rower and part of the university rowing team and he also enjoys swimming (which is handy if the rowing goes wrong!). | |

We are sad to report that Betty passed away this morning after a short illness. A staunch supporter of the group and volunteer who looked after all those attending the Thursday drop-ins. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

New Minibus
We are delighted to tell our members that the Group has purchased a new minibus. Well new to us that is!. It's a Renault Master similar to the current blue bus, but a more up to date version. It's five years old and in very good condition. We hope that it will serve us well over the coming years.

The Thornaby Shop is closing
After a number of very successful years trading, our shop in Thornaby town centre is due to close on October 4th due to the demolition and rebuilding of the town centre.
We would like to thank all our volunteers past and present for their exceptional efforts in making the place what it is, not just a shop but a social centre. We would equally like to thank all our customers for their support and especially those who have donated items for us to sell.
We’ve had a great run and the place will be greatly missed by those involved with it.
A special thank you to Carol and David without whose untiring efforts non of this would have been possible.

New Medical Student.

2008 sees us with a new medical student –Stephen Worthy. Stephen is from Witney in Oxfordshire and is studying medicine at Durham. He has yet to decide on an area in which to specialise, but thinks that surgery would probably be the area that would most interest him. Currently he is living in halls in Stockton, his hobbies are playing badminton and squash and likes anything in the field of athletics that gets his adrenalin running. |

Our Charity Shop in Appleby House at Thornaby goes from strength to strength.
This year we have suffered two floods, both in May. The building adjacent to ourselves, Brus House, was demolished earlier this year (as part of the Thornaby Town Centre redevelopment), and caused quite severe problems with debris and dust.
Despite these problems, Carol and all the staff have remained cheerful and have managed to keep the shop clean and tidy, and to sell mountains of goods. During one week in September we had our best weekly sales ever, with sales of £1,161. During the months of September and October sales have averaged over £1,000 per week. Sales this year up to the end of October exceed £33,000. WELL DONE
Thank you to all our members and friends who have donated goods to the shop, and all the people who have called into the shop to say hello and spend their money.
The Charity Shop is our main source of funding. The funds generated by the shop are used to run the Drop in Centre and to pay for the upkeep (fuel, insurance, repairs etc.) of our two adapted minibuses.
Finally as regards to the future of the shop, we know it will close, as part of the Thornaby Town Centre redevelopment, but at the time of writing we have not been given a closing date.

Andrew McKendry - Medical student
Andrew is from Bushmills in Co. Antrim and is studying medicine at the University of Durham. Part of his course requires him to undertake a placement in the community and the group are lucky to have him until December 2006.
Andrew says that he is really enjoying the experience and that it’s “a really great bunch of people” within the group. He first became interested in MS while working as a waiter in a hotel where he met someone with MS for the first time and always wanted to know more.
On completion of his course he hopes to specialise in radiology.
